Payroll fraud is on the rise. We have seen a number of instances of potential fraud recently,
and would like to remind everyone to be on alert. As such, we have compiled a list of some
“red flags” to look for, which may be indicative of payroll fraud. Additionally, we have
listed some solutions that we would offer to help deter this fraud:

Red Flags:

• Hurried set-up requested by new payroll customer
• New contact person suddently provided for payroll customer
• Communication only via email from payroll customer
• Communication itself or method of communication seems abnormal for the customer
• Initiation of payroll files on atypical dates
• Even dollar payroll credit amounts or payroll credits outside the norm for a customer
• Customer and its employees are in geographically diverse locations

Solutions:

• Beware of contact that is made only via email. Confirmation phone calls or other forms of
verification should be used for new customers or when new employees are added for a customer
• Do not approve new customers or add new employees if there are any questions regarding any
actions or information given during the approval process
• Remind customers to:
1. Limit access and use of computer(s) that maintain sensitive information
2. Install and update firewalls and anti-virus software
3. Be leery of unknown emails, links, and pop-up boxes. These can all be ways to access to your system
